June Grass

June Grass, also known as foxtails, are weeds found in this area that can be dangerous to dogs. The seed has a sharp point at one end so it moves easily in one direction, but not the other way. As they work their way into skin, ears, noses, etc, and become lodged, foxtails can cause infection. If not treated, medical problems and/or death may result.

Warning signs of an imbedded June Grass:

  • Skin: sores between toes or under arms, sores on skin accompanied by swelling.
  • Eye: discharge from eyes, tearing, squinting, swollen eyes.
  • Throat: coughing, gagging, stretching neck and swallowing.
  • Nose: severe sneezing, bleeding from nose, pawing at nose. Symptoms may diminish after several hours, but become intermittent for several days following.
  • Ears: pawing at ear, crying, tilting/shaking head

How to prevent June Grass problems

Be aware of your yard and your surroundings when going on walks or to the park. June Grass grows in dry, bushy areas. Check your pets feet and underbelly regularly. Brush your pet to make sure you havent missed anything.
