Peanut Butter Dog Bones
2 tbsp. vegetable oil
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 cup water
1 cup whole wheat flour
2 cups white flour
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine oil, peanut butter, and water. Add flour (one cup at a time) then knead into firm dogh. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutter. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes. Makes 2 1/2 dozen.
Chicken n' Dog Bones
3 cups white flour
3/4 cup yellow corn meal
1 cup chicken broth
4 tbsp. softened margarine
1 egg
1 tbsp milk
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Combine flour, cornmeal, chicken broth, and margarine. Knead dough for 3 minutes. Apply a light layer of flour to rolling surface and pin. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut with cookie cutter. Beat eggs and milk together and apply to top of biscuits with a brush. Bake for 35 minutes on ungreased cookie sheet. Makes 2 dozen.
Whisker-Lickin' Shrimp Salad
3 oz. small, precooked shrimp
1/4 cup freshly cut greens, chopped finely (may use cat grass if available)
1/3 cup clam juice
No cooking required. Break shrimp into small pieces. Mix shrimp, grass and clam juice in bowl. Single serving.
Cat's Meow Cookies
7 oz mashed sardines (2 cans, drain oil)
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup dry nonfat milk
Thoroughly mix ingredients together. Roll into approximately 30 balls about the size of a marble. Place on cookie sheet treated with fat-free non stick cooking spray. Bake at 350 degress F until brown, about 12-15 minutes. Let cool before removing. Store soft cookies in air tight container in refrigerator.
Banana Carob Dog Cookies
1 1/2 cups ripe bananas, mashed
1/4 cup applesauce
3 cups uncooked oatmeal
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup carob chips
Stir together all ingredients until mixed. Roll into balls the size of small walnuts. Drop by tespoon onto ungreased baking sheet. Press flat with a fork. Pre-heat oven. Bake at 350 degress F for 15 minutes. Cool before serving. Store in refrigerator. Makes approximately 30 cookies.
Turkey Jerky For Dogs
1 lb ground turkey
2 tsp low sodium teriyaki sauce
1/2 tsp ginger
Mix all ingredients and spread thinly across a full cookie sheet. Bake for two hours at 170 degrees F. Using paper towels, blot grease from jerky. Slice the jerky into one-inch strips, turn over and return to the oven. Bake for two more hours at 170 degrees F. Cool and store in freezer.
Lip-Smackin' Dog Brownies
1 lb beef liver
4 eggs
1 cup cornmeal
Cut liver into several small pieces. Mix liver with eggs and cornmeal in a blender until smooth. Pour into 8 inch square baking pan that has been treated with fat-free cooking spray. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F. Bake for 30 minutes. Cool, cut into bite size squares and serve. Store in air-tight container in refrigerator.
Chilly Pooch Pops
1 quart fruit juice (i.e. apple, lemonade)
1 ripe banana, mashed
1/2 cup plain yogurt
Blend juice, banana and yogurt thoroughly in a blender. Pour the mixture into ice cube trays and/or popsicle containers and freeze. Serve picnic style on the grass, or in your pup's bowl. Great for hot weather. Makes about 48 cubes, ice-cube tray size.
Home-Made Dog Biscuits
3/4 cup meat drippings, or beef broth
1/3 cup margarine
1/2 cup powdered milk
1 egg
3 cups whole wheat flour
In a large bowl, pour heated meat drippings or beef broth over margarine to melt. Add powdered milk, beaten egg, and a pinch of salt. Slowly add flour 1/2 cup at a time, mixing well. The dough will be stiff. Roll dough to 1/2" thickness and cut with your favorite cookie cutter. Place on cookie sheet treated with fat-free non-stick baking spray. Bake at 250 degrees F for 45 minutes. Let cool and store in air-tight container. Makes about 2 dozen.
Canine Restricted Protein Diet
1/4 lb ground beef (do not use lean round chuck)
2 cups cooked white rice without salt
1 hard-cooked egg, finely chopped
3 slices white bread, crumbled
1 t (5 g) calcium carbonate (1)
Also add a balanced supplement which fulfills the canine MDR for all vitamins and trace minerals.
Cook beef in skillet, stirring until lightly browned. Stir in remaining ingredients and mix well. This mixture is somewhat dry and its palatability can be improved by adding a little water (not milk). Keep covered in refrigerator. Yield: 1 1/4 lbs.
