Preventative Care

Our focus at Fairfield Veterinary Hospital is on the prevention of health problems. The following is a brief summary of our recommendations. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Heartworms

This is the most serious and deadly parasite we see. It is very difficult and expensive to treat a dog with heartworms and some do not survive even with intensive care. After an initial blood test to verify that your dog is not already infested, the disease is prevented by giving a chewable pill once a month. Follow-up testing is also needed every three years. We recommend starting the preventative at the first vaccination (8 weeks of age)
