OFA Hip Dysplasia Evaluation
What is Hip Dysplasia?
Canine Hip Dysplasia, also known as CHD, can be found in any breed of dog. However, it usually affects large and/or heavy-boned breeds versus small and/or thin-sleek breeds. This disease is polygenic. This means that it takes several genes, not just one, to develop the disease. It also means that there could be several generations between cases of CHD in any bloodline. This disease is the reason it is necessary to x-ray and certify pets for breeding. Breeding dogs with normal hips reduces the incidence of CHD.
The most common symptoms of Hip Dysplasia are stiffness or soreness in the hips. A lot of times the pet will limp and have a hard time jumping or climbing stairs. Extended exercise can make them much worse and sore. Also, extended time in one position (such as lying down) can make the stiffness worse as well.
OFA Requirements for Certification
- Age Requirement - The dog must be 24 months of age or older at the time the x-ray is taken to qualify them for an OFA breed registry number.
- Permanent Identification - The Canine must have some form of permanent identification to be certified through AKC. This can be a microchip, a tattoo or a DNA profile identification number. Note: OFA does NOT require the pet to have the permanent identification. It is only necessary if they plan to certify them through AKC.
Making an OFA X-Ray Appointment
- Schedule it as a surgery - drop off between 7:30 - 9:00 if we've seen your pet here before. If we have not seen your pet, then it's between 8:00 - 9:00 so the doctor can check your pet in.
